In designing vessels such as workboats and patrol craft, it is important to opt for the most efficient method of propulsion for the particular application and vessel characteristics. Conventional propellers, either FP or CP, generally prove advantageous when vessel speed is comparatively low, for example less than 25knots. Above this figure, waterjets have become the usual propulsion choice although surface drives are providing a strong challenge in many sectors, particularly when very high speeds are required.
