The gap caused by the retirement of the Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior //, after 22 years of service, is set to be plugged in October with the delivery of Rainbow Warrior III, which is nearing completion at Fassmer Shipyard, located in Berne, Germany. Fortunately, the second incarnation of Rainbow Warrior gets to enjoy a happier retirement than her predecessor, which was infamously bombed in 1985 by persons believed to be connected to the French government; instead, she has made her way to Bangladesh, to serve as a medical ship. Both vessels were deployed primarily to combat what Greenpeace terms "environmental crimes", including illegal fishing, whaling and shipping of timber from the world's most endangered rainforests, but the latter vessel was also involved in activities such as sampling the waters off the coast of Fukushima, Japan, for radioactive content, in the wake of this year's nuclear plant disaster.
