Bespoke ferries for Canada

Sweden-based designer Knud E. Hansen has sealed a deal with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador (GNL), Canada, to produce the basic design for six bespoke sister ferries, all to be operated on the intraprovincial south shore routes off the coast of Newfoundland, and to be designed to handle the harsh climate typically encountered on those routes. Each of the new ferries will feature a length of 41m and a passenger capacity of 36, and will operate at a service speed of 12knots. Special features are set to include a multi-use cargo deck, a cargo hold and facilities for disabled persons. Construction is set to be handled at an as yet unspecified shipyard in the vicinity of Vancouver.
