Propeller inspections by drone

Start-up company Global Drone Inspection (GDI) is launching an ROV-based propeller and thruster inspection service, intended to provide a cost-efficient and safe alternative to diver-based inspections.Since 2016, sister company Robotics In Maintenance Strategy (RIMS) has been offering unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) inspection services to larger commercial and offshore vessels, utilising these flying drones to survey large and potentially hazardous onboard tanks. GDI was launched to offer ROV services, thus providing a full package for the maritime and offshore sectors.For the new service, GDI will utilise drones from Blueye Robotics, which will be operated remotely, either from a mothership or the shore. "It's the same principle as operating the UAVs, only we are swapping 'flight paths' for 'sailing plans'," David Knukkel, CEO of GDI, tells Ship & Boat International.
