Robotic minesweepers for the Royal Navy

The UK Royal Navy has ordered three unmanned minesweeping bots in a bid to shield sailors from serious injuries when engaging in mine countermeasures (MCM).These ROVs, to be supplied by Atlas Elektronik UK (AEUK), will detect smart naval mines that use AI to identify and target vessels and submarines passing overhead, and enable crew to neutralise them from a safe distance.AEUK's Combined Influence Minesweeping (SWEEP) system comprises an autonomous surface vessel towing a sensor unit, which uses magnetic, acoustic and electric technology to identify different types of mine. The SWEEP system is controlled by a portable command centre, which can be set up on a support vessel or operated on land, and has been developed for compliance with COLREGS when in autonomous mode.
