Rijkswaterstaat, the Netherlands' Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, has made a commitment to environmental sustainability by ordering what will reportedly be the country's first battery-powered multi-purpose workboats in their size range.The ministry, which looks after the Netherlands' main road and waterway networks, has contracted compatriot boatbuilder Bijlsma Wartena to produce three MPV 30 class workboats, which will be deployed to perform tasks such as patrolling, channel marking, survey and fishery monitoring, both on the Netherlands' inland waterways and up to 30 miles off the country's North Sea coast. Not only that, but the trio will do so with minimal release of NOx and CO_2 emissions, courtesy of hybrid diesel-electric powertrains.
