Mitchell Gold burst onto the design scene nearly two decades ago when he solved a quirk of the furniture world. Noting that it took an achingly long time for high-end sofas to be delivered, Gold and his partner, Bob Williams, established their upholstered-furniture business with a killer combination of great looks and fast turnaround—and it grew into one of the country's most successful home-furnishings companies. Now the partners are expanding, with a line of stylish lighting and case goods—tables, bookcases, armoires, and the like. With a slew of new stores that opened in the past year, including ones in Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, and Seattle, the Mitchell Gold Co. has morphed into a comprehensive purveyor on a par with the nation's biggest, all while staying true to its popular ethos of having inventory ready to ship. Whereas the majority of the pieces introduced by other firms at the High Point furniture fair in April still won't be available for a few months, Gold's line is in stores and showrooms right now.
