Field investigations of earthquakes by British engineers and scientists have a long history dating back to Robert Mallet (1820 - 1880) and John Milne (1880 - 1940) (Muir Wood, 1988). In our own time, Nicholas Ambraseys of Imperial College London was a pioneer in recognizing the value of field missions in grounding the often abstract discipline into hard reality.
