Northern Sea Route: a Sovcomflot view

The following is a personal view by Robert Thompson, first deputy md of SCF-Unicom, shipmanagment arm of SCF Sovcomflot, Arctic specialist and pioneer of recent crossings of the Northern Sea route.With a number of Northern Sea Route (NSR) voyages now complete, a deeper understanding of the route is apparent. From an economical and environmental perspective the NSR offers a considerable saving in costs and emissions for a vessel taking a voyage from the northern part of Europe to the Far East.
