IACS enhances its decision-making

At its 82nd Council Meeting (C92) late last year, the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) adopted a new governance model as part of a long-term strategy to future-proof the Association.The main change was the move to elect a Council chair every two years (renewable) rather than annually (non-renewable) as at present, and the adoption of simple-majority voting for most decisions.In addition, the Council chair will be assisted by a new General Policy Group (GPG) chair, (elected every three years), who will join the IACS secretariat in London, as well as by an enhanced 'chair office' comprising the GPG chair, three elected Council members (rotating annually) and IACS secretary general (permanent).Collectively the new moves are designed to make the IACS decision-making process faster, more consistent and more widely consultative.
