Data, smart systems, lightning-fast processing, connectivity and the internet of things are changing every aspect of life today. Shipping is no exception, now witnessing an exponential rise of digitalisation in many areas, made possible by astonishing connectivity developments.In the past, once a ship left the quay, direct contact was lost in all but extreme circumstances. Manual reports were sent from time to time by fax or email. Even today, experts believe that up to three quarters of the world fleet - around 75,000 ships - may not have efficient connections.This is a false economy, warn the digital pioneers. Charterers now demand the latest systems and out-of-date ships will not make it on to the fixture list. Ship operators and their customers want the benefits of real-time support for a range of functions including shoreside liaison, voyage optimisation, ship and fleet performance analysis, weather routeing, OEM remote monitoring, and maintenance management.
