The Coast Guard is on the verge of bringing fundamental change to the nation's idea of maritime domain awareness.rnThe service is completing an initial limited deployment of its Rescue 21 program, and by year's end will be ready to quickly deploy a networked package of radars, sensors, antenna towers, radios and classified communications suites to each of its 270 command facilities and approximately 1,400 small boats.rnTo patrol nearly 95,000 miles of coastline, the service at present relies in large part on the eyes and ears of people on boats, auxiliary Coast Guardsmen and a dated FM-based radio system installed more than 30 years ago.
