The path to a career as a military artist begins along a grid. Actually, many grids. Using colored pencils, sketch paper and an easel, students in the "Basic Multimedia Illustrator" course at the Defense Information School (DINFOS) at Fort Meade, Md., painstakingly replicate a photo portrait of themselves using a grid system approach, completing the composition and coloring of one section before moving on to the next until, eventually, a lifelike face reveals itself.
