The U.S. Maritime Administration makes funding available and guarantees loans to U.S. shipyards for improvement and vessel construction through two programs.rn1. The Assistance to Small Shipyards Program had $98 million available for 2009 through the fiscal 2009 National Defense Authorization and American Recovery and Reinvestment acts.rn2. The Title XI Federal Ship Financing Program guarantees loans that promote growth and modernization of the U.S. Merchant Marine and U.S. shipyards.rn3. Some Title XI applications deal with the construction of tank barges and barge units that will be chartered by major oil companies to transport product.
