Unols Fleet

Briefing: Twenty-four civilian oceanographic research ships are used for oceanographic research as part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet. While ownership of the vessels varies from the Navy to the National Science Foundation to the universities, all are operated by universities or research institutions. The Coast Guard's three ocean-going icebreakers also are scheduled by UNOLS.
