In releasing their respective planning guidance documents in late October, the chief of naval operations (CNO) and the commandant of the Marine Corps have pledged to remain focused on core capabilities while acknowl-edging the significant fiscal and security challenges they face. CNO Adm. Gary Roughead, in his guidance "Executing die Maritime Strategy," builds on his guidance from 2010. His three focus areas continue to be to build the future force, maintain warfighting readiness and develop and support Sailors, Navy civilians and their families. Topping his list of priorities for 2011 are to "build a Navy with appropriate force structure and strategic laydown; maintain decision superiority; align the requirements, resources and acquisition processes; and evolve and establish international relationships."
