Thailand Eastern Seaboard Council Hosts Events for CARAT Participants

The Thailand Eastern Seaboard Council participated in and hosted a series of events with Sailors and Marines taking part in the 17th Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercises in Thailand in mid-May. CARAT is a series of annual bilateral military exercises among the U.S. Navy and Marines and the armed forces of Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Approximately 1,800 U.S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel participated in CARAT Thailand 2011, according to the Navy. The force included the amphibious dock landing ship USS Tortuga, guided-missile destroyer USS Howard, frigate USS Reuben James, and rescue and salvage ship USNS Safeguard from Combined Task Group 73.1. Additional participants included Marines from 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines, U.S. Navy Seabees, a U.S. Coast Guard training team, and P-3C Orion and SH-60 Seahawk aircraft.
