Great Hybrid Fleet

As the commercial automobile industry moves toward hybrid vehicles that use fuel more efficiently and pollute less, the Navy is making its own shift toward greener alternatives to fossil fuels aboard its ships, and specifically to a central piece of that effort — the hybrid electric drive (HED).The Navy is only a year away from its stated goal to locally demonstrate a green strike group, and only five years away from actually deploying such a strike group. In order to achieve that lofty objective, the service will have to develop and install an HED on its gas-powered ships to complement the nuclear-fueled submarines and carriers in its fleet. Destroyers, cruisers, amphibious ships and potentially others would need this hybrid drive to be compatible with Navy's ambitious vision of a "Great Green Fleet."
