Prelude to the War of 1812

Though there was much to be celebrated in the British naval victory over a combined French and Spanish fleet at Trafalgar on Oct. 21, 1805, Napoleon's victory over Russian and Austrian forces at Austerlitz six weeks later ensured the conflict between Europe's great powers would continue for years. Across the Atlantic, the United States sought to remain clear of European hostilities and continue to engage in trade with all parties to sustain a growing economy. At war, Britain and France desired to deny each other the benefits of commerce with the new American republic.
