FasL Binds Preassembled Fas

One way in which cells perceive their surroundings is through the binding of extracellular ligands to their cell surface receptors. This process is perhaps more complex than one would think. How does binding of a ligand to its receptor translate into a cascade of intra-cellular signals? The usual answer is that as soon as the ligand engages its receptor, it induces either conformational modification of the receptor or assembly of separate receptor subunits into a complex; downstream activation events then ensue.
