For half a century, Charles Rosenberg's The Cholera Years (1) has stood as a foundational model for the history of medicine. Exploring medical, religious, and civic responses to successive epidemics, Rosenberg traced the transformation of American medicine and society alike. In the ensuing decades, the theoretical tool kit that scholars use in analyzing the history of disease and medicine has been remade. It is therefore with considerable anticipation that one opens Knowledge in the Time of Cholera, a book that revisits pivotal moments in the history of cholera deploying the newer historiography of the professions and analytical methods of the sociology of knowledge.
