Opening of Advanced Photon Research Center in the Kansai Science City

We can read, write and send vast amount of information with high precision and efficiency using light, especially with lasers. Lasers will play a more vital role in the 21 st century where better use of information and energy will become essential for improving our life and sustaining environment. Systematic research on lasers and related fields is necessary to fully realize the potentiality of lasers, or, more broadly, light. A new laboratory, Kansai Research Establishment, for advanced research on light was started in 1995 by Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). The Kansai Research Establishment is composed of two divisions covering different research areas; the Advanced Photon Research Center (APRC) specializing in the development and applications of advanced lasers, and the Synchrotron Radiation Division for construction and utilization of the world-largest synchrotron facility SPring-8 located in Harima of Hyogo Prefecture.
