Both in manpower and financial means, Japan has played an important role in improving water supply systems throughout Asia. To achieve another set of international goals, namely the MDGs of the United Nations, Japan's continued contribution through ODA is very important and indispensable.rnDiscussions to make full use of Japan's experience, technologies and other advantages in helping other Asian countries to create a sus-tainable water supply infrastructure are progressing apace. The Asia Gateway Initiative compiled in May 2007, which envisions Japan acting as a bridge between Asia and the world, and the amendment to Economic Growth Initiative in June of the same year emphasize that Japan should actively contribute to the development of water supply systems in Asia and many other parts of the world.rnIt is also important to promote not only combine bilateral partnerships through the projects of JICA and JBIC but also cooperation with U.N. organizations. Japan has contributed to the WHO Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality in its rolling revisions, strengthening its tie with WHO on water supply and sanitation. Through involvement in the activities of WHO, the International Water Association (IWA) and other related organizations, Japan is expected to continue with international networking and the implementation of policies that are based on global perspectives.
