Diesel vehicles emit less CO_2 in comparison with gasoline-fueled vehicles. Having successfully managed to treat particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) in exhaust gas, diesel engines are now being developed that are more environment-friendly.rnWhile diesel engines have better thermal efficiency and lower CO_2 emissions compared with gasoline engines, air pollution caused by particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) contained in exhaust gas has become a serious issue.rnPM is the designation for particles emitted from diesel engines, and is believed to be adsorbed by compounds derived from partially-burned fuel, lubricating oil (SOF) and sulfate generated from the sulfur content in light [diesel] oil, around the black smoke (soot) that is generally formed from carbon.
