THE BRITISH CONTRIBUTION TO THE ANTI-FASCIST STRUGGLE IN SPAIN

The fall of the Soviet Union has had multiple and rather contradictory effects on our ability to reflect, on the Spanish Civil War in particular and the 1930s in general. On the one hand, the removal of a perceived political and military threat in the 1990s has enabled some observers to see 1930s communism as a more varied and differentiated, less monolithic, phenomenon. Some have thus been able to understand that the communism in the heads of international volunteers in Spain was not the same as the communism growing more repressive under Stalin in the Soviet Union. On the other hand, the cultural and political right has redoubled its efforts to keep its necessary enemy alive and well.
