Shifting notions of accountability in public- and private-sector research in the UK: some central concerns

The UK, like many other countries in recent years, has initiated policies designed to better exploit the public research base. The institu-tional breakdown of the boundaries ofpublic-and private-sector research resulting, in part, Jrom these activities has been a matter of some commentary, though too often with a narrow focus. This article examines the tensions in the blurring between the public and private sector in terms of professional, customer, legal and political accountability.
