摘要

In Mobilizing Science, Sabrina McCormick explains how scientization of politics-'where experts play a critical role in policy making and lay people are marginalized' (p. 3)-is more and more counterbalanced by the emergence of democratizing science movements (DSMs). These are social movements and as such contest the state or corporate interests, but they also differ from conventional social movements because of their use of expertise and science. They often, if not always, have a local impetus and start from citizens worrying about a specific issue in their home, neighbourhood or community. Because of the contentious nature of environmental sciences and expertise, DSMs are often environmental movements.
