MPEG-4 may someday help create a new interactive world, but on this planet today, it is still missing fundamental support by the computer industry. The three major media players on the market use proprietary codec for stuffing audio and video onto modem lines. Microsoft's new Media Player offers ISO compliant MPEG-4 video codec as an alternative to its "enhanced" proprietary codec, which is similar to MPEG-4 but has a 20 percent code differential that offers 30 percent better picture quality, according to Microsoft.
