To keep your best employees on staff, you may want to conduct a stay interview with candidates who are packing their bags. But how do you conduct a successful stay interview? The answer is preparation beforehand. You can't just wing it and see what happens. That might even be counterproductive because it suggests to your employees that you have better things to do, you don't care about the outcomes, and you have little regard for them. What a way to turn a potential win into a huge loss. Here, I describe a pre-meeting step so that you come out of the meeting with a greater relationship with and commitment from your employee.
