摘要

Satellite communications have revolutionised search and rescue location, but the technology has not been without its problems. To the end of 1998, Cospas-Sarsat had assisted in the rescue of 10,000 persons in distress in over 3021 events. With Inmarsat confirming its distress and safety obligations, the safety of those at sea looks assured. The Cospas-Sarsat system provides distress alert and location information to search and rescue (SAR) authorities anywhere in the world for maritime, aviation and land users in distress. The system was originally designed to operate with satellites in low-altitude Earth orbit (LEO). The Cospas-Sarsat LEO search and rescue (LEOSAR) system has been in operation since 1982, but was recently complemented with geostationary satellites (GEOSAR).
