The maritime world is stacked to the gunwales with more than its share of hard jobs and unsung heroes, but even in this context anchor handling crews can claim one of the least glamorous and potentially dangerous jobs in the industry. They are expected to loiter for long periods - often in heavy seas - waiting to support other vessels, with the crews routinely working closely with heavy loads, wires under high-tension strain and limb-crunching machinery. And even then, this is only after one unlucky individual has had to clamber out and balance on the stern, reaching out to snag anchor pennant wires or heavy buoys with a boathook.
