In this GPS (Global Positioning System) age, the routine taking of sights using a sextant is now a thing of the past on the vast majority of commercial ships. So it may seem surprising that both the Nautical Institute (NI) and the British Royal Navy have gone to some lengths to jointly launch a completely revamped edition of the RN's (Royal Navy) standard text on astro navigation and to promote the use of a computer programme that makes taking sights a far less painful business than it once was.
