There have been numerous occasions when bridge watchkeepers have fallen asleep and the vessel has ended up as a casualty. An obvious way to counter this problem is by fitting a bridge navigational watch alarm system (BNWAS), which activates if a button is not pressed within a certain time-span. Recent incidents have rekindled interest in the various types of BNWAS available.
