Response time crucial for security alert system

Concerns have been raised as to whether ship security alert systems (SSAS) can help prevent acts of terrorism. The issue arose during a seminar held at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore on 7 December. Former BIMCO international affairs liaison officer Thomas Timlen, now a visiting research fellow with the school's Maritime Security Programme, pointed out that acts of terrorism generally leave little time for mobilising response forces.
