Bunker ships face oil-spill curbs

Victims of oil spills from bunker ships will be able to claim compensation from November next year. The new IMO rules - officially known as the International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage, or 'Bunkers Convention' - were passed in November. The law was ratified by 18 IMO member states, representing nearly 16% of the world's merchant shipping tonnage. It makes shipowners liable to pay compensation for oil damage caused in the territory, territorial waters or economic zone of IMO members.
