Piracy continued its year-on-year rise in 2009, figures released in January showed; it was the third successive year in which the number of reported incidents had increased. According to the Piracy Reporting Centre of the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), there were 406 pirate attacks worldwide compared with 293 in 2008.rnBy far the biggest problem area was Africa, which accounted for just under two-thirds of all attacks. The vast majority of attacks associated with Africa were carried out by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, in the Somali Basin and across the Indian Ocean. The IMB report noted that attacks were now taking place 1,000nm off the coast of Somalia.
