Third PNG inspector charged in Rabaul Queen sinking

A third officer in PNG's National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) has been arrested as a result of the Rabaul Queen sinking.Madang NMSA surveyor/ inspector Carl Kamang had certified that the vessel complied with Papua New Guinea's Maritime Safety Act, a mere four months before its February 2012 capsizing and sinking, which saw the deaths of at least 162 people.He was charged on 5 September with manslaughter as well as the failure to carry out his duty and will face trial in Madang later this year. It is the seventh arrest to date connected with the disaster. Chief inspector Ben Turi, who heads the criminal investigation, told SAS on 6 September that police have uncovered new evidence that the ship failed to meet safety requirements.
