While land-based users have become accustomed to the convenience of video conferencing, voice over internet protocol (VOIP) calls, and instant messaging, the amount of bandwidth required makes access very expensive for seafarers. Globe-comm Maritime said that it can now provide these functions to ships using a fraction of the data and at a fraction of the cost of shoreside applications.
