To see how OVMSA worked from an operator's viewpoint IHS Maritime contacted Smit Lamnalco, the Netherlands-based global provider of towage and associated marine services. The company has embraced OVMSA since 2013, in addition to ensuring its compliance with SOLAS, ISM, ISPS, and MLC2006. But the company wanted to go beyond the requirements of best-practice voluntary codes and statutory compliance. In the words of Erik Nuhoff, Smit Lamnalco's group HSEQ manager, "the company belongs to a select group of industry trendsetters, and wants to distinguish itself from our competitors by being 'best in class'".
