Information is a key resource in the fight against piracy, but many incidents are not reported. That obstructs a robust response, according to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB). Masters should report an actual or attempted piracy or armed robbery incident to three separate groups, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) recommends. First contact would be the nearest rescue co-ordination centre (RCC) or regional piracy focus point. Second, masters need to alert the flag state, and, finally, the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC).
