In the early 2000s, after a long career of research supporting the hydrocarbon industry, which included a 1994 Nobel prize, chemist George Andrew Olah experienced a sea change. He stated that the continued upward cost pressure and environmental risk from use of gasoline, diesel oil, and various petrochemicals could no longer be sustained.
