Air pollution on board ships gathered media interest in September 2017, when Naturschutzbund, a German environmental non-governmental organisation published the results of a survey into onboard pollution on cruise ships. These already have to run on fuels with 1.5% m/m sulphur content when sailing in European waters, as opposed to 3.5% m/m sulphur content in merchant shipping (with exception of shipping in emission control areas with stricter limits).
