Seafarer fatigue has long been recognised as a major contributory factor, either directly or indirectly, in groundings, collisions, and other maritime incidents. The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch as long ago as 2004 reported that fatigue was a major contributor to 82% of the 66 groundings and collisions that took place in the middle and morning watch hours between 00:00 and 06:00. Alliance Global Corporate and Specialty, and insurance giant, said 75 % of nearly 15,000 marine insurance claims between 2011-16 involved human error. Fatigue or lack of sleep and rest deprivation was often seen as playing a role in these claims, which cost the equivalent of USD 1.6 billion.
