The Colorado River Compact of 1922 established that New Mexico had an allotment of water, although relatively small compared to the other states, from the Colorado River and its tributaries. The major tributary affect-ing New Mexico is the San Juan River in northwestern New Mexico. The city of Albuquerque specifically purchased a major portion of those water rights decades ago.
