When I think of hauling and transporting, I remember my high school summers working for a farmer, Joe Quinn, in New Hampshire. During the harvest season, I would arise long before sunrise to drive a truckload of boxes of apples or bags of potatoes to the Boston Open Market. The adventure of driving the country roads in the dark with a full load, standard transmission, no power steering, and steel cable brakes to the rear wheels only ("The Safety of Steel from Foot to Wheel"), required both strength and daring. Today we can be more comfortable in the truck driver's seat than we are at home: air conditioned cab, air-suspension seats, all-wheel drive, dynamic steering, and all-wheel power brakes, as well as full visibility of highly improved highways.
