In 1978, W-L Construction & Paving Inc. bought four new Macks for its fleet in Chilhowie, Va. Up to that point, the company, which had been in business since the '60s, had bought Fords "and just whatever we could afford," says Equipment Manager Travis Lewis. The plan was to run the Macks five years and trade them in. The company didn't sell them until 1999. Over the years, W-L has tried various makes and models as it tries to develop a spec that will allow the growing company to be productive while meeting the state's bridge laws. Both specs and maintenance practices have changed as the industry has changed.
