Fully automatic transmissions for on-highway trucks relying on torque converters have been around since the mid 1960s. Semi-automatic transmissions with conventional clutches followed with Eaton Fuller pioneering a semi-automatic shift, the twin split transmission. Appearing in the mid 1970s in Europe and offered in the UK most famously in ERF's heavy truck range, the box was one you either loved or hated.
