摘要

The provision of access for maintenance used to be the Cinderella of the design process, to be tackled once the overall design had been completed and forced to fit in. But this is no longer the case, as the CDM Regulations and health and safety legislation have firmly placed the onus on designers to ensure that provisions for safe and easy access for activities such as inspection, cleaning, maintenance and repair throughout the life of a building are made in all cases. The increasingly complex geometry of modern buildings can present problems in this respect, and it is therefore important that designers understand the mechanics, limitations and available options of access systems, so that they can be safely and economically designed in.
