Ralph Erskine 1914-2005 Architect who won UK recognition after years in Sweden

Ralph Erkskine, who died in March aged 91, became a celebrity in Britain only late in his career as his early work was done wholly in Sweden. He was born in London and retained his British nationality, but settled in Sweden early in 1939 when he was 25 and made his reputation there, practising from Drottningholm near Stockholm. An internationally known figure by the 1980s, Erskine was awarded the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture in 1987. Erskine was born in London in 1914. His parents were drawn to the socialist ideals of the Fabian Society, and although not themselves Quakers, they sent Ralph to the Friends' School at Saffron Walden.
