Welcome to Module 15 in our occasional series of CPD features designed to broaden your professional knowledge while you work. This module is sponsored by Dorma. Choice is one of the buzzwords for the new millennium. In space planning terms, choice translates into flexibility in the use of space. This article will deal with how this flexibility can be achieved by using movable walls, assess what is available in the present market and discuss what considerations should be made when specifying them, with particular emphasis on their acoustic performance. Movable walls are impermanent partitions used to alter the layout of rooms, subdivide them and improve the utilisation of the space available. Examples of possible use included exhibition space, leisure and sport facilities, conference rooms, dining spaces, etc.
